  5.     As if Mikhail Gorbachev didn't have enough problems, another
  6. epidemic of ethnic rioting broke out last week, this time in
  7. the Central Asian republic of Kirgizia. Fighting between
  8. Kirghiz and members of the Uzbek minority in the town of Osh
  9. began as a dispute over housing, then spread along the border
  10. with Uzbekistan and into Kirgizia's capital, Frunze. After five
  11. days, at least 78 people had been killed and almost 400
  12. injured, many shot by police. A state of emergency was
  13. declared.

  15.     The crisis of nationalism is destined to grow worse. Led by
  16. Gorbachev's nemesis, Boris Yeltsin, the parliament of the
  17. Russian Federation voted 544-271 for a draft resolution giving
  18. Russia the right to override the laws of the Soviet Union. When
  19. Yeltsin was elected head of the Russian government two weeks
  20. ago, he promised to declare "sovereignty" over the republic's
  21. economy and resources. If the bill is enacted, it will bring
  22. Russia into conflict with the Soviet constitution, and Yeltsin
  23. head to head with Gorbachev.
